Eileen Gray's mid 1920s daybed design is considered to be one of her most famous. A minimalist form that is characterized by its overarching rectilinear shape where the designer's use of chrome-plated tubular steel literally "frames" the upholstered seating/reclining expanse. This long, broad cushion has been meticulously tufted in a way that breaks up the surface into a pattern of rectangles and squares - these resulting shapes relate beautifully to the side profiles of both the cushion itself as well as the base. The tubular steel rises above the seating plane, forming a rectangle that again "frames" the negative space beyond the daybed. Not only is this resulting outline an engaging decorative element, it's also a pragmatic one that provides a support mechanism for the daybed's user to even add a loose cushion or throw. Eileen Gray's daybed is both a sculptural masterpiece and an extraordinarily comfortable seating design. It becomes the centerpiece of any interior in which it is placed - its form prompts the daybed's placement within a room so that it can be enjoyed from multiple vistas. Upholstery is available in a wide range of fabric and leather options. Given that an average person's height has changed over the nearly 100 years since this piece was first designed, in addition to the original dimensions, ClassiCon also offers a slightly larger version. Manufactured by ClassiCon.
