Designed by: Bernard Schottlander
Manufactured by: DCW Editions
As admirer of Alexander Calder, in 1951 Bernard Schottlander created his MANTIS series of lamps. Movement is intrinsic to all of the designer's work - both an artist and an engineer and, in no small measure, a handyman, Schottlander devised a clever system of counterweights combined with a series of strong and flexible metal bars to engender this remarkable aesthetic where the lamp's diffuser appears like an acrobat suspended in midair. Composed of aluminum using spinning and chasing techniques that are a part of the metalworker's inventory of skills, yet to which Schottlander brought his sculptor's eye. Noted here is the Mantis BS1 floor lamp that can be adjusted to four different positions. Manufactured by DCW Editions.
