On the Rocks sofa sectional was designed by Francesco Binfare in 2004 for Edra, Italy. Often described as a "seating landscape," On the Rocks is a relatively simple design that consists of four different geometric seating elements - three are in the shape of five-sided polygons; the fourth is a quadrilateral. By placing their respective different angled sides adjacent to other elements, a number of different seating configurations can be created. Once the seating expanse has been created, the sectional is completed with a fabulously sensual backrest - available in two lengths - that can be positioned to meander across the seating expanse in a number of ways. The configuration noted here features three elements with a long backrest that bisects the form to create seating all around. A fourth element floats in the space that can do double duty as a surface with a tray or simply pulled toward the sectional functioning as an ottoman.
This candid shot of the On the Rocks sectional - configured as four elements with short and long backrests in the same removable upholstery textile as the previous photo - is actually from the Switch Modern showroom. Unlike so many of the beautiful images of On the Rocks in various interiors that are included in this blog, this photo truly illustrates how people interact with the piece Guests always gravitate to our On the Rocks sectional and instantly start using it in a variety of ways. Whenever we host an event, the seating expanse quickly fills up with folks not only engaged in conversations but as a place holder (note the coats and bags) of those who have gotten up for a moment to grab some hors d'oeuvres or a cocktail.
On the Rocks' flexible backrest can be positioned in a number of ways to reveal the depths of the desired seating plane. In the left photo, a single backrest bisects the horizontal expanse to create seating from multiple directions. In the right photo, the backrest has been oriented toward the back creating seating in the front and sides. The On the Rocks backrest is wonderfully weighted and features a pair of very clever heat-formed round rubber "grips" that are located on the underside of each end - these keep it in place that you select on the seating surface.
This large On the Rocks configuration sports two backrests that have been oriented to create seating from all sides. All On the Rocks elements are surprisingly composed without the use of expected frames or rigid internal supports. Rather, Edra has developed a special patented foam - Gellyfoam® - that it combines with other foams of varying densities to hand-form each of the shapes. Not only does this guarantee the sitter unbelievable comfort but it enables the shape retention of the geometric elements.

Like its proprietary Gellyfoam®, Edra is also known for its technologically advanced textiles. The manufacturer offers some extraordinary textile options for On the Rocks - many feature a soft texture that only reinforces the structural comfort that the piece exudes.
