One of Ingo Maurer's iconic lighting designs, One From the Heart is as much an illuminated sculpture as it is a table lamp. Originally designed as a wedding gift for friends, the lamp is laden with metaphor. It features a red plastic heart that is supported between a blue and red cable - these are entwined below the heart-shaped diffuser and dramatically splay apart like antennae above it. Suspended between these cables above the diffuser is another smaller heart that functions as a pivoting mirror allowing the user to direct a heart-shaped projection onto a wall. The entire lamp rests upon two thick stainless discs - each at different elevations. "Lurking" underneath the taller of these discs are two green plastic crocodiles - their wide-open mouths reveal pink interiors with white teeth. We cannot help but think that Ingo Maurer's use of these crocodiles references the Ancient Egyptian funerary deity, Ammit. With her hybrid form - crocodile head, front legs of a lion, and backside of a hippo - she was referred to as the "devourer of the dead" or the "eater of hearts." She resided near the scale that weighed the heart of the deceased (the discs of the lamp base resemble scale pans) and if the soul was deemed unworthy to continue on its journey to the afterlife, Ammit would devour it. One from the Heart is a sophisticated lighting design that will instantly engage in any interior that it is placed. Includes an inline dimmer. Manufactured by Ingo Maurer.
