This remarkable lighting design uses technology to mimic the illumination created by fire. The concept was enthusiastically introduced by Ingo Maurer in 2012. It started with a video of the flame generated by a burning candle. This moving image was pixelated and converted into data that was programmed into two sets of 128 LEDs located on either side of the slender rectilinear plate form. A smart, random algorithm ensures that the sequence of movements doesn’t repeat in order to mimic the natural behavior of the flame. In the middle section of the plate there is a small button switch with which the LEDs can be dimmed. The electrical components have been arranged to create an enigmatic engaging pattern on either side of the rectilinear plate. My New Flame can be operated with 4 AA rechargeable batteries or by simply using the USB cable supplied. This lamp has an integrated 0.6 W LED, 2700K, CRI80. Rechargeable batteries are not included. When seen at just a short distance, the light emitted truly looks like it is coming from a flame. Upon close inspection of the form, the engineering and LED source becomes apparent. An engaging piece that is perfect on a plethora of surfaces. The light emitted is akin to that from a burning candle. My New Flame is available in a choice of colors with a chromed steel base. My New Flame is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Manufactured by Ingo Maurer.
