The Zettel'z 6 is a design icon of the late 1990s and one of Ingo Maurer’s most popular suspension lamps. Presented essentially as a “kit” where the designer has provided the materials and tools to create the diffuser’s form, it also relies heavily upon the user to ultimately determine the lamp’s final aesthetic. This clever design is essentially a mesh cylinder that contains the light source through which thin metal rods are inserted at various angles – each thin rod supports an integrated clip to which the user attaches a piece of thin, rectilinear Japanese paper. The designer includes 40 printed sheets and 40 blank ones – the idea is that the user creates their own notes or artwork on the latter. The rods can be inserted to create varying depths of where the paper is hanging – these rods are fixed into place with a silicone slider. Once the user is satisfied with the result, these can be clipped. This flexibility allows the user to create an expansive diffuser or one that is considerably more compact. The resulting assemblage of clipped paper sheets functions as the light source diffuser. Zettel’z 6 is fun! It does require some thought and many folks opt to simply use only the blank sheets and choose to create or not create artwork for these. The process can be organic and collaborative – quite literally inviting your guests to “leave a note” as part of the resulting diffuser. Extra sets of 80 blank sheets are available and can be ordered to refresh or change out the personalized aesthetic of the piece. In addition to Zettel’z 6, a larger version – Zettel’z 5 – is available in a separate product listing. Manufactured by Ingo Maurer.
