Designed by: Vilhelm Lauritzen
Manufactured by: Louis Poulsen
The VL38 table lamp was originally designed in the late 1930s by Vilhelm Lauritzen in partnership with Louis Poulsen for the construction of the Radiohuset building in Copenhagen. Vilhelm Lauritzen’s lamp design, VL38 and the pendant VL45 both designed for Radiohuset, started to appear in Louis Poulsen catalogues after World War 2 in the middle of the 1940s. VL38 in white/brass was relaunched in fall 2016. To accommodate contemporary advances in light technology and energy efficiency the fixtures have been fitted with LED. The black edition of the VL38 introduced fall 2017 has a stronger outline than the original white version, though maintaining the loved retro look and the soft, curvy expression of the original design. The shade is constructed from spun aluminum and the stem is brushed brass. The fixture emits downward directed light. The angle of the shade can be adjusted to optimize light distribution. The shade is painted white on the inside to ensure a soft comfortable light. High/low/off switch on the base. Brass surfaces are untreated and will develop a patina over time. Manufactured by Louis Poulsen.

“Inspired by an urge to carry the soft luminescence of the Scandinavian summer into the dense darkness of the Scandinavian winter, Louis Poulsen has always sought not to design lamps, but to shape light.” Founded in 1874, Louis Poulsen is a Danish lighting manufacturer born out of the Scandinavian design tradition where form follows function. The function and design of its products are tailored to reflect and support the rhythm of natural light where every detail in the design has a purpose and every design starts and ends with light. From the mid 20th century through the present, Louis Poulsen’s close partnerships with designers and architects like Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton, Oivind Slaatto, Alfred Homann, Oki Sato and Louise Campbell, has established the manufacturer as one of the key global suppliers of architectural and decorative lighting. Defying traditional product categories, Louis Poulsen’s products serve and span the professional and private lighting markets for both indoor and outdoor applications.
