Designed by: Jean-Marie Massaud
Manufactured by: Poliform
As much sculpture as it is seating, Jean-Marie Massaud provides a thoroughly new aesthetic within a time-honored lounge chair concept. While the idea of an organic seating expanse atop a strongly geometric or linear base has been explored in different ways by several designers throughout the second half of the 20th century (Eames La Chaise, Vitra, 1948; Bertoia Asymmetric Chaise, Knoll, 1953; Desanta Flying Carpet, Rosenthal, 1988), Massaud's design features a cloud-like mass that is actually composed of leather having been injected with polyurethane foam – the perimeter reveal of the seat is seamed together in such a way that the entire seating expanse resembles a piece of ravioli. Its painted finish metal base has been beautifully articulated by Massaud with striking vertical and horizontal cants that form an assemblage of polyhedric shapes that visually "outline" the negative space of the lounge's underside. Manufactured by Poliform.
