The Beat Light Series of suspension lights was inspired by a trip to India taken by Tom Dixon and his Royal College students. While observing craftspeople manipulating the surface of spun brass by both beating and polishing the material, the qualities of light refraction and diffusion became evident. The diffuser shapes in the range were actually inspired by the various pots and vessels fabricated in brass.
Noted here is the Beat Wide Suspension Light that features a saucer-like diffuser composed of smoothly polished brass that is available in several finishes – shown here with a matte black exterior. Its interior sports a beaten texture that exquisitely refracts light that has been clear-coated to prevent oxidation. Matching ceiling canopy is also in a matte black finish. Manufactured by Tom Dixon.

Tom Dixon started receiving critical acclaim in the mid 1980s for his furniture designs - by the late 1980s, his designs were being produced by Italian manufacturer, Cappellini. In the 1990s, he founded Eurolounge and unveiled his hugely successful iconic Jack “sitting, stacking, lighting thing” in 1997. The following year, he joined Terence Conran’s Habitat, where he remained as its Creative Director for a decade. In 2002, Dixon launched his namesake brand that produces an ever-expanding collection of furniture, lighting, and accessories including now iconic pieces like Mirror Ball, Copper Shade, Wingback Chair, and Beat Light. Dixon’s designs have received numerous awards and are included in the permanent collections of museums worldwide including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Centre Pompidou, Paris. The designer has also created a number of engaging interiors through the Tom Dixon brand subsidiary, Design Research Studio.
