Designed by: Frederick Kiesler
Manufactured by: Wittmann
Frederick Kiesler's engaging and beautifully engineered Freischwinger NR. 2 lounge chair was designed in the 1930s for the Mergentime residence in New York. Textile designer, Marguerita Mergentime, and her husband Charles, commissioned Kiesler to design the interiors and furnishings for their apartment in the recently-built Beresford building on Central Park West. Kiesler developed several pieces for this interior including his much celebrated aluminum biomorphic nesting tables, Party Lounge sofa, and the Freischwinger NR. 2 cantilever lounge chair. This lounge chair features a tubular steel frame that begins with the back, morphs to become the base, curves upward to form the armrests, and turns downward to form the seat's rear support. This curvaceous frame supports the upholstered back and seat - the latter seemingly defying gravity as its suspends at a cant (the German "Freischwinger" literally means "cantilever" in English). Available in a wide range of fabric and leather upholstery options. Manufactured by Wittmann.
