The Sella stool is part of Achille + Piergiacomo Castiglioni’s Ready Made Collection of furniture and lighting from the late 1950s and early 1960s that includes the Mezzadro stool also manufactured by Zanotta as well as the Arco and Toio floor lamps produced by Flos. The premise of the collection was to recontextualize every day, extant objects in unexpected ways. With Sella, its saddle leather seat is something that one actually associates with a bicycle. Here it has been placed upon a columnar support in pink enamel lacquer – its well-weighted cast iron base in the shape of a hemisphere allows the user to quite literally “ride" the stool by moving around with one’s feet planted on the floor. When not in use, Sella resembles an engaging Dadaist floor sculpture. While designed in 1957, Sella was not placed into production until 1983. Sella is included in the permanent collections of museums worldwide including London’s Design Museum, Germany’s Vitra Design Museum, and Musée d’Art National Moderne, Paris. Manufactured by Zanotta.
