Serge Mouille (1922 - 1988) was born in Paris, France, trained as a silversmith, he received a diploma from the School of Applied Arts in Paris. In 1954, he succeeded Gabriel Lacroix as the head of the metal workshop at the school of Applied Arts. In 1951, Jacques Adnet, director of the Company of the French Arts, asked Mouille to design lighting for a South American client - the results were the large, angular, narrow-profile forms for which the designer is now renowned. His designs from the 1950s were shown at the legendary Steph Simon Gallery in Paris that also exhibited the work of Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Isamu Noguchi, and Jean Luce. Mouille's designs are included in the permanent collections of several museums worldwide including New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
